Acclaimed Mexican Seafood Spot now in JC

Do not let the casual vibe and cutesy décor fool you. Mariscos El Submarino (which roughly translates to The Seafood Submarine), is some seriously pedigreed seafood. The husband-and-wife team behind the restaurant opened their first spot in Jackson Heights, Queens in 2020 after failing to find local spots that served the authentic, no frills seafood Chef Alonzo ate growing up in Mexico. They received a rave review from the New York Times in 2021 and since then have opened a second shop in the Greenpoint neighborhood of Brooklyn. Jersey City is their third outpost, with additional Brooklyn shops in Park Slope and Clinton Hill slated to open soon.

The very first thing to try on the menu is the aguachiles, an avocado-centered dish that is made with shrimp, raw fish, chiltepin peppers, lime juice, onions and a burst of soy sauce. There are 4 sauce varieties offered - red, green, black or mango/habanero.  Each serving comes with a side of tostadas and is enough for two people. There are also seafood tacos, standalone tostadas, oysters and shrimp cocktail.

Mariscos El Submarino is located downtown on Columbus Ave. in the former home of East Flour. Lovers of fresh seafood and Mexican spice and flavor combinations, do yourself a favor and check them out!

Mariscos El Submarino is open 7 days a week from 12pm to 10pm.
