Infrared Sauna Therapy Craze is Hot in JC

SW3AT Sauna Studio opened on Newark Avenue this past November, the first JC outpost of a holistic wellness trend that first gained traction in LA (surprise!) before making its way to NYC and eventually, us.

The idea is that infrared saunas work by heating your body directly, instead of warming the air around you, like a traditional sauna, or by heating objects around you, such as rocks in a steam room. Which means infrared saunas operate at a lower temperature, so you can handle the heat, stay in the sauna and sweat for a longer period of time.

So yes, we have read that the hard science regarding the reported benefits of using infrared saunas is up for debate. Specifically, their ability to cure and prevent medical conditions, to aid in weight loss, and to remove toxins from the body. So, while we cannot comment on that with any authority, let’s put that aside. There is no debate that our first visit to SW3AT was a totally relaxing experience - an instant treat for our sore muscles, holiday-induced frayed nerves and dehydrated skin.

There are more feel-good factors when it comes to SW3AT and their admirable, awesome business model. The business is owned by JC resident Alyza Brevard-Rodriguez. She is an active duty Navy veteran who contracts her companies’ needed services from fellow businesses that are owned by minorities, women, and/or her fellow veterans.

A 45 minute session will cost you $40, and there is a monthly unlimited package for $300. As we walked out of our first session feeling glowing and relaxed, that latter option was beyond tempting. If our January resolve to hit the gym harder than ever comes to actual fruition, we know how we will be treating ourselves!
