A truly unique new coffee shop is open in the Heights. Àbákẹ́ Books & Cafe celebrates stories from across the African diaspora while creating space for creativity, coffee and conversation right here in Jersey City. This unique space—part bookstore, part coffee shop, and part creative hub—is quickly becoming a favorite among local readers, writers, and coffee lovers.
The name “Àbákẹ́” comes from the Yoruba language and translates to “to be loved,” a meaningful touch that reflects the owner’s ancestral roots and vision for the space—a welcoming place where people connect over shared stories, ideas, and experiences. On the shelves, you’ll find curated works by authors from across the African diaspora and voices that explore diverse perspectives. Beyond books, the cafe pours ethically sourced coffee beans from regions like Tanzania and Rwanda, turning every cup into a conversation starter.
Àbákẹ́ Books & Cafe is also a performance venue, encouraging people to write and perform, with spoken word events in the works. On a recent Saturday, a young local was spinning records to everyone’s delight. What a welcome new business for JC.
Abake Books & Café is open Wednesday – Saturday from 8am – 4pm and Sunday from 9am – 2pm.
